Teaching with Technology Updates and Reminders

Training class for TechTAs

Email message sent to current instructors on August 21, 2023.

Note to Jones School Instructors: your services and support may differ, see JGSB Technology web site.

Dear Instructors,

The Learning Environments (LE) department provides services and support to Rice faculty. The LE website provides detailed information. Here are a few updates and reminders regarding teaching technology for the fall 2023 semester.

SPECIAL SERVICES

TechTA: Student assistants provide support to faculty with the additional technology requirements needed to teach in dual-delivery mode or to record classes. Fill out the Tech TA Request Form to request a TechTA for the entire semester or a few classes.

Record Classes: Read these instructions about how to record your lectures in a dual delivery classroom.

Clear System: During the summer, the operating system of the clear.rice.edu cluster was upgraded to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. Please confirm that the necessary applications for your class demonstrations and homework are available and functioning properly. If you encounter any issues, please create an OIT Help Desk ticket.

  • Note: The operating system update has improved the ssh host certificate encryption algorithm, resulting in a new certificate. You will receive warnings when connecting due to the certificate change, and you will need to delete the old certificate and accept the new one.

Video Digitization Update: The process for video digitization was changed after a recent service review. Due to the transient nature of streaming film licenses, please resubmit the films you plan to use for your class each semester so we can be sure your film is available. Please complete the Video Request Form if you need to use digitized items for the spring semester.

RESOURCE UPDATES

New Canvas Quizzing Tool: New Quizzes training starts in mid-fall, offering more question types, moderation options, and printing capabilities. Partial point grading is also available. For now, please check out the New Quizzing tool blog post.

Poll Everywhere: As the demand has increased, LE has expanded the license count of Poll Everywhere, an online system for audience response.

Accessibility: Our goal is to promote inclusive digital experiences through collaboration, education, and advocacy. We've revamped the Teaching with Technology course's Getting Familiar with Accessibility module and have an informative blog. Join our A11Y slack channel (by sending an email to teaching@rice.edu) for news and updates and to connect with others passionate about ensuring equal access for all learners. Our best practices support Rice's values of responsibility, integrity, community, and excellence.

AI in Teaching: An AI usage guidelines page is currently being developed and will be updated throughout the semester.

Gradescope: Available in all Canvas courses, Gradescope assists in grading assessments, including paper-based exams and programming assignments. It supports multiple TA graders and AI-assisted grading.
