Cybersecurity Awareness Month: How to Spot & Report Phishing

Stop and think before clicking on a link or opening an attachment

""

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

During October for Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Information Security Office is highlighting security practices so you can protect your digital identity and Rice resources.

RECOGNIZE PHISHING...

Phishing attacks have become an increasingly common problem for organizations of all sizes and can be very difficult to spot. It’s important every individual stop and think before clicking on a link or opening an attachment and know how to spot red flags.

Phishing messages or “bait” usually come in the form of an email, text, direct message on social media, phone call, and even QR Code. These messages are often designed to look like they come from a trusted person or organization, to get you to respond. The good news is you can avoid the phish hook and keep accounts secure!

The most common phishing campaign we see at Rice is employment fraud via email. This appears to be a job offer for administrative assistant or research assistant work. All job offers of employment should be verified independently with the department or organization before responding.

...AND REPORT IT TO THE INFORMATION SECURITY OFFICE

  • Common signs of a phishing message include:
  • Urgent and alarming language
  • Requests for personal or financial info
  • Offers that are "too good to be true"
  • Email addresses or links that do not match what they claim to be

Instructions:

  • Open a new email addressed to helpdesk@rice.edu, drag and drop the suspicious message into the new email, and click on send OR
  • Forward the suspicious message to phishing@rice.edu
